As a young boy the narrator learns form his parents that Arnold, the older brother he believed to have starved to death, might actually be alive. Fearing for their safety during their flight from the advancing Russian Army in 1945, his parents placed baby Arnold into the arms of a refugee, losing them both amidst the crowd. The family has settled in Westphalen and established a new life for themselves, but losing Arnold continues to haunt them.
