1919 gründet Walter Gropius mit seinem ,,Bauhaus"- Manifest die legendäre Kunst - und Architekturschule in Weimar. Für damalige Verhältnisse im beschaulichen Weimar ein Schock. Kunst und Handwerk wird als eins begriffen. Der Mensch, sein Alltag und die Gemeinschaft rücken ins Zentrum. Der Film beleuchtet die Anfänge der Schule um ihren Gründer Walter Gropius, um Wassily Kandinsky, Lyonel Feininger, Johannes Itten und Paul Klee, von der Idee des Zusammenlebens und der Gemeinschaft. Die Schule zieht nach Dessau um, wird von dort durch die Nazis vertrieben, geht nach Berlin und wird 1933 aufgelöst. Dennoch wirkt der einfluss der Schule bis heutee auf der ganzen Welt fort.
