Summary, etc. Die 17-jährige Chandani hat einen sehnlichen Wunsch : Sie will in die Fuβstapfen ihres Vaters treten und ebenfalls ein Mahut ,ein Elefantführer werden. Doch das ist entsprechend der jahrhundertealten Tradition Sri Lankas ein reiner Männerberuf. Da ihr Vater Sunamabanda jedoch keinen Sohn hat ,an den er das über viele Generationen gesammelte Familienwissen weitergeben kann ,beschlieβt er gegen den Widerstand der anderen Mahuts, seiner Tochter eine Chance zu geben ;er überträgt ihr die Verantwortung für das Elefantenkalb Kandula. In der täglichen Arbeit mit diesem jungen Elefanten soll Chandani die Ernsthaftigkeit ihres Berufswunsches beweisen und die Techniken der äuβerst schwierigen Arbeit als Mahut erlernen.
