Summary, etc. Gerhard ,,Gundi" Gundermann ist ein Liedermacher in der ehemaligen DDR. Auf einem riesigen Braunkohlbagger arbeitet er im Schichtbetrieb im Tagebau. Gleichzeitig schreibt er sowohl systemkritische Lieder als auch über die Schönheit der Natur, mit denen er sein Publikum begeistert. Die Widerspruch in seinem kurzen Leben wird besonders deutlich, als nach der Wende herauskommt, dass er als informeller Mitarbeiter für die Staatssicherheit tätig war. Er musste andere ausspähen und wurde wegen seiner kritischen Songs ebenfalls beobachtet. Einerseits ein Freigeist, andererseits überzeugter Kommunist. Ein Film vor und nach dem Ende der DDR. Eine anachronistische Biographie, der versucht, nicht über den Künstler, Familienvater und politisch engagierten Arbeiter und Sänger zu urteilen, sondern ihn uns als Mensch in einem vergangenen Staatssytem nahebringt.
